Anza Borrego Desert State Park- 2-24-13

Adventure to Anza Borrego Desert State Park....a two-part hike.
First part...hiking the Palm Canyon Trail

Off on the trail with the Seniors, 24 of us.
About an hour and a half drive from east of Indio.

The first part of the hike is a dry, hot, barren trail.
Luckily it was a beautiful, cool day...a perfect time of year to be hiking out here.
Only a 3 miler, but will end up at a lush palm oasis.

We come to a tree-trunk footbridge which crosses a creek.
We're not used to seeing water or creeks on our hikes.

The landscape is changing...more green...and we see the palm oasis in the distance.

And there's even a little waterfall...to my left.

Okay...there you can see it..in the middle?

Came upon a pretty substantial creek here.

Heading to the palm oasis.

...and another creek to cross.  One of the hikers slipped and fell in...oops.
Thank goodness I have my hiking poles.

We're at the palms...an impressive stand of California palm tress.

Our group...quite colorful, aren't we?  Stopped for a snack here before heading back out.
There were other waterfalls to explore, but we decided to head out.

Going out the same way we came in...some elevation gain...so bouldering down.

...and the trail heads through boulders...

...and the mountainside is a geologist's dream with a variety of rock formations.

Can't pass up pictures of cactus.

And we're done with that part of the hike...took us about 2 1/2 hours for this segment.

Now...Part 2

Headed over to Galleta Meadows to see the prehistoric creatures.  These creatures were envisioned by Dennis Avery (of the Avery labels company), land owner of Galleta Meadows Estates in Borrego Spring.   Avery commissioned Ricardo Breceda of Perris, California to create the metal sculptures.   Breceda operates Perris Jurassic Park along I-215 just south of Perris.

There are 129 metal sculptures located in Borrego Springs.  Here is one of my favorites.  We didn't even come close to seeing them all.

A close-up...

This one was amazing...a 350 foot serpent...

...which is erected from one side of the road to the other.

Look at that face...

Now this one is my favorite.

...no, this scorpion.

or this giant grasshopper.

We just touched on the sculptures...and I can't wait to go back and see some more.

Another great day out in the desert!  One never knows what one will find out there!
