And couldn't pass up the champagne divot stomp at half time. You know that is the only reason I go.
Later that day, we decided to go to the Indio Performing Arts Center (IPAC) for the Big Band Ballroom Sunday. Starting at 6:15 p.m. they have a dance class, then from 7-9 p.m. the Ted Herman Orchestra plays (a 14-piece live band) allowing everyone the opportunity to dance. This week the dance lesson was the jitterbug, and each week the lesson changes to the tango, cha cha, waltz, east coast swing, night club 2-step, etc. Allan and I arrived early, and as people were entering in their cocktail dresses and high heels, we looked at each other and decided we may have gotten ourselves into something a little more sophisticated than what we had planned. ( I was in my slacks and sketchers.) Many were even carrying cloth bags...we couldn't figure that out, until they started changing their shoes and putting on their "dancing shoes."
Our lesson went well...we pretty much know how to jitterbug our way, but they added a few interesting moves. We got a little tangled up on the "she turns, he turns, she turns again" move. So, when the band started, we got out there and tried out our new steps...boy, were we out done. Geez, these old people can really dance! When they started playing other tunes, the tangos started, then the rhumbas...our partners at our table were professional dancers. He had been an instructor in San Diego for 35 years and had competed professionally. Yes, we were out of our element. We felt like we were watching "Dancing with the Stars".
What we liked about it...the timing was great...and knew we'd be home by 9 p.m. just in time for bed. What we didn't like...everyone was a good dancer. Will we go back...we're not sure.
